Kensington is located on the northern part of Randwick City along Anzac
Parade. Key landmarks are University of NSW, Randwick Race Course, the National
Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and the large open space area of the Australian
Golf Course. NIDA was the breeding
ground for such stars as Nicole Kidman and Mel Gibson. The West Kensington Heritage Conservation
Area is located in the north western corner of the suburb and is an excellent
example of federation and interwar housing. Close to 60% of all dwellings in
Kensington are apartments ranging from 1930s to the present (with many three
storey walk-ups constructed during the 1970s). These apartments are primarily
located in and around the town centre an in Raleigh Park. The Raleigh Park
development, located in the northern part of Kensington is an example of a
modern (1980s) residential complex with a mixture of high rise residential and
townhouses. The dominant architectural style is the red-brick bungalow. If it’s
space you’re after, then this is the suburb for you. Young professionals will
also feel at home in the area, with contemporary apartments in the Raleigh Park
offering views of the city skyline.
Public transport is a significant presence in the Kensington Street network
with major STA bus services operating along Anzac Parade and cross regional
services operating along Todman Avenue.
The main town centre of Kensington is in a strip of primarily one and two
storey shops along Anzac Parade. Peters of Kensington is a key attractor.
There’s also a number of retail outlet stores including babywear, lingerie, and
haberdashery shops. There’s somewhere to buy your morning paper and a litre of
milk on the way home from work as well.
While outside the suburb, Kensington is adjacent to major open spaces of
Centennial Park and the Royal Randwick Racecourse.
Anzac Parade cuts through the middle of the suburb, but it does have some
highlights, including one of Sydney's most eccentric eateries, the kitsch
Grotta Capri Seafood Restaurant, and an enclave of some of Sydney's finest
Indonesian, Chinese and Malaysian restaurants.
Kensington
Public School is the local state school. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College
and Our Lady of the Rosary Primary and Sydney Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools are
also in the area. The University of NSW and Sydney Institute of Technology
(TAFE), Randwick are also close by.
